In the 80's and 90's New York's crime rate peaked to an all time high, the crack epidemic hit and murder rates had doubled.  New York city had become a reign of terror as  crime was king. East New York and Cypress Hills were declared a "Killing Ground" and gunfire was so common the police stoped responding to sounds of gunfire. Parents put there babies to bed in the bathtubs incase a stray bullets were fired.  The city had lost it's heart and drugs had stolen it's sense of hope. The citizens had thought it was an unwinable battle and began leaving and losing faith in the reason to live there and the city was in a downwars spiral and despare. The city set a record 2,245 murders in 1990. It was time for change. The city endured one of the darkest times in it's history. It developed a deep understanding of what it feels to oppressed by a drug epidemic and the weight of crime paralizing it's streets. Through it all today it surrounds its citiziens with symbols of hope and a better tomrrow. 3.5 million people visit the Statue of liberty ever year.

There are 80 landings as you work your way up. It's a public piece.

The tablet which the statue holds in her left hand reads July 4th, 1776 to proclaim liberty and one of her feet stands on chains. It celebrates a nation that stands for something greater than itself. When people know they are a piece of something beautiful they live with purpose and meaning. Art should call us to stand for a greater purpose and move us Onward.
